Famous Works from South End Artist Found in Storage, Now Up for Auction

It sounds like the plot of a movie: Important works by a prominent South End artist were found recently in an abandoned locker in western Massachusetts.  Now, the artwork, a unique collection of works from visual artist Allan Rohan Crite, who was a long-time resident, artist and important figure in the South End for much of the 20th Century, is being put up for auction this weekend.  The collection features a selection of autobiographical sketches in pencil documenting the African American experience. The works include prints, drawings, and the artist’s personal documents and studio materials, including a mannequin and his mimeograph machines. The works were the content of Crite’s studio that were put into storage in the 1990s when he became ill.  Crite lived and worked in Boston for most of his life, starting out as a student at the Children’s Art Centre at the United South End Settlements before graduating from English High School in 1929 and earning degrees from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard, and Suffolk. In his later years, he returned to the South End to live at work at the Allan Rohan Crite Research Institute on Columbus Avenue.  In 1986, the intersection of Columbus Avenue and West Canton Street was named Allan Rohan Crite Square. A 2002 Boston Globe review called Mr. Crite “the granddaddy of the Boston art scene,” naming him as “a master of his craft and a treasure of his community.” An African-American man, Crite’s works centered around telling about what he called the “African-American Experience.” “As a visual artist,” Mr. Crite said in a 1998 interview with the Harvard Extension School Alumni Bulletin, “I am . . . a storyteller of the drama of man. This is my small contribution – to tell the African-American experience – in a local sense, of the neighborhood, and, in a larger sense, of its part in the total human experience.”  He died at the age of 97 in 2007. You can read more about Crite’s life in an obituary published by the Boston Globe.  Crite’s works will be put up for auction at Grogan and Company, Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers in Dedham. The auction will be begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 16th, with a three-day exhibition opening on Thursday, June 13th.  More information on the auction can be found here.  SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates  South End Patch

Baby Kittens Found on West Dedham Street

Three tiny kittens were rescued from a South End back yard on Sunday. A family first discovered the kittens a few days ago in their West Dedham Street backyard, then called in the Animal Rescue League of Boston. “They weren’t able to find the mom, so they felt the best thing to do was bring them to us so they could be provided with around-the-clock care in a foster home,” Animal Rescue League said in a Facebook post. The kittens are only two weeks old, so they are getting bottle feedings eery three hours, said the ARL. “These babies are currently shacking up with one of our most experienced foster-parents beause they are unable to eat on their own,” the ARL wrote. “We sure are lucky to have such fabulous foster-parents at the League!” SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch

Five Guns, Child Found in South End Bed Bug Search

Two South End residents face weapons charges after pest control inspectors found guns in their apartment. Following a search, officers turned up three more guns, some of which had altered serial numbers.  Boston police officers responded to a report from the Boston Housing police who had found firearms at 16 East Brookline Street on April 5. When Boston police officers arrived, they observed the two suspects sitting in the parlor area handcuffed. Officers spoke with the Boston Housing Chief Stephen Melia that there were two firearms found under a mattress when Pest reliever employees conducted an inspection of bedbugs in the apartment. A Pest Reliever employee said that he lifted the mattress in the bedroom and found tow handguns while inspecting for bedbugs. At this point, the worker informed his partner, who phoned their supervisor. Boston Housing Police were dispatched at about 10:41 a.m.. The front door of the apartment was locked, so officers made contact with the housing manager. According to the report, officers found a small child in the apartment with no parents in sight. Officers found the two suspects asleep on the mattress. The suspects would not wake up to verbal commands. When officers were able to awaken the suspects, they ordered them into the living room, flipped the mattress, and found a .380 and a Glock handgun. Officers executed a search warrant for the apartment on at 11:52 a.m., and interrogated the suspects. The suspects stated that they knew that there were firearms under the mattress that they were sleeping on, but they had little knowledge of how the guns got there. The suspects told officers that other people had access to the apartment.  Officers found a Sentry Storage Safe located under the bed. The suspects denied ownership of this safe or any knowledge as to where it came from. Officers noted that this safe is common for containing weapons and contraband. Due to the weight of the safe and the noise from the interior, officers located the keys and opened it. Detectives found three revolvers and large plastic bags of ammunition. The ammunition was counted and totaled 300 rounds, which were all the same caliber as the weapons recovered on the scene. Two of the guns had defaced serial numbers and one was a large capacity firearm. According to the police report, the Pest Control Inspection Notice was posted on the mirror of the bedroom for April 5 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m..  Sayria Cooper of 16 East Brookline Street and Dannie Levy of 25 Donald Road, Mattapan were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of firearms, possession of firearms with altered serial numbers, […]

South End Man’s Remains Found in Charles River

State Police detectives identified the remains of a man found in the Charles River on Thursday as a 32-year-old South End man who went over the rail of the Harvard Bridge along Massachusetts Avenue on New Year’s Day.  Police were alerted at 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 1st that a man had jumped off the bridge along Mass. Ave, but were unable to save the man or find his body despite hours of searching.  “The investigation during the intervening months into that man’s death has not developed any indication of foul play,” said District Attorney spokesperson Jake Wark in a statement released Friday morning. “Because the case is not believed to be criminal in nature, his name is not being released.” SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch
