Boston Snow Emergency Parking Ban Remains in Effect
Boston’s parking ban on major roads throughout the city will remain in effect, the mayor announced on Saturday afternoon. “We’re halfway there,” Mayor Menino said. “Our crews have been out there, non-stop, and our residents have listened to the early warnings to stay home and stay off the roads. We’re not out of the woods yet. Right now, it’s critical that residents continue to work with us and let the crews have full access to the streets.” You can see the streets that are banned from parking in the South End neighborhood here. The city said public works crews are out in full force, but it will take significant time, even after the snow stops this afternoon, to clear every roadway. The city also said it is vital that residents continue to stay off the roads and let the process run its course. Share Your Photos: How Much Snow Do You Have?
We at Patch like to have fun – even when we’re covering a story as big as the Blizzard of ’13! So when the biggest storm in years (potentially in the history of Boston weather) is headed our way, we get into battle mode – and even get a little silly. That’s what this idea is about – and we want you to take part too! A fun way we want to track the storm across Massachusetts is through lawn ornaments. They serve a purpose in the spring and summer, but often feel left out in the cold of winter. Not anymore. We are posting photos of lawn ornaments throughout Massachusetts to highlight snowfall across the commonwealth during and after the storm. Friday Morning Forecast: Snow Totals Closer to 3 Feet
Boston residents waking Friday morning expecting to see a blanket of snow will be surprised to see that the streets remain clear, with just the occasional flurry drifting down. But weather forecasters maintain: The storm is coming. And when it does, it may be bigger than previously expected. A National Weather Service blizzard warning update posted early Friday morning states that the “historic winter storm and blizzard” could drop up to 3 feet of snow on the area, rather than the 1-2 feet expected yesterday. The alert covers the Boston area as well as much of eastern and southern Massachusetts, southeastern New Hampshire and all of Rhode Island. The NWS alert calls for “heavy snow … blowing and drifting at times” with quarter-mile visibilities and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. Accumulation is expected to top 2 feet. Light snow will develop by this morning, becoming heavy late in the day into the evening commute,” according to the National Weather Service. “The heaviest snow, especially focused along the I-95 corridor, will fall tonight into Saturday.” Temperatures will be in the upper 20s throughout the storm. The National Weather Service further advises people to avoid using roads during the storm’s peak, when “whiteout conditions are anticipated as roads become snow covered.” The strong winds and heavy snow may cause damage to trees and structures and could result in scattered power outages, the NWS alert states. Things to Know in the South End Today, Feb. 8: Snow Emergency at Noon, MBTA Shuts Down at 3:30 p.m.
1. Weather: On Thurday night, Friday’s storm was upgraded to a blizzard warning, and at least two feet of snow is expected in this area. The storm will start on Friday morning and will hit peak intensity starting Friday afternoon into Friday night. See here for the latest forecast. 2. MBTA To Shut Down: All bus, subway commuter rail and other services will be suspended starting at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Regular MBTA service will operate “with significant delays” from the start of service Friday until the 3:30 p.m. cutoff. See here for more info. 3. Snow Emergency Parking: A snow emergency will begin at noon in Boston. Here’s a list of the streets you cannot park on, and a link to the nearby garages in the South End that are offering parking specials. Boston Snow Emergency Parking in the South End
In case of a snow emergency, make sure you know where you can and can’t park so you don’t end up with an expensive ticket and a trip to a tow lot to claim your car. Do I have to move my car? Not sure if you’re parked on a snow artery? Arrive up to two hours prior to the start of the snow emergency and leave two hours after the emergency is lifted; otherwise you will be subject to standard parking rates. DON’T Park on a posted snow emergency artery during a declared emergency. You will be ticketed and towed. Use space savers more than 48 hours after a snow emergency has been lifted. Storm Could Drop up to 18 Inches of Snow in Boston
A major winter storm will move into the Boston area on Friday into Saturday, potenially dumping one to two feet of snow on Boston this weekend. A weather service snowfall total forecast map released late this morning shows 14 to 18 inches falling in the Boston area. “A major winter storm will bring the potential for a foot or more of snow across much of the region Friday into early Saturday,” said the winter storm warning from the National Weather Service. Light snow will develop on Friday morning, and snowfall will increase to become heavy on Friday afternoon then taper off on Saturday. “Deep snow accumulations are likely on untreated roads,” according to the NWS. “In addition, strong winds may develop to create near blizzard conditions across Eastern Massachusetts Friday night into early Saturday.” Snowfall rates could be 2-3 inches per hour, and wind gusts could reach up to 50mph, the advisory reads.
