Man Charged in Overpass Stabbing Held Without Bail

Posted on March 27, 2013

The new Drug Accountability Court in Cherokee County is up and running.

The man whom authorities believe fatally stabbed another man in the South End last month was held without bail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

Christopher W. Powell, 39, of Everett, was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Wednesday morning on murder charges for the stabbing death of 44-year-old Corey Thompson, whose body was found under the I-93 overpass in the South End in late February.

Assistant district attorney Edmond Zabin, chief of the district attorney’s homicide unit, told the court at Powell’s arraignment that Thompson had been stabbed approximately eight times, including wounds to the torso and two to the chest.

A passerby noticed Thompson’s body under the I-93 overpass near Traveler and Albany Streets around 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 and called police.

State police detectives were able to link Powell to the scene through video surveillance, witness statements and phyiscal evidence from the scene, the DA’s office said. Powell also allegedly admitted to the crime, according to the DA’s office.

His motive for the stabbing still remains under investigation, said DA spokesperson Jake Wark.

Powell will return to court on April 23.
