Heat Wave Hits Boston

Posted on June 25, 2013

Skies over Back bay looked hazy during Boston's first heat wave of the summer. Temperatures reached 90 degrees in Boston.

With temperatures above 90 degrees this week, the city of Boston is reminding residents to look out for those who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Temperatures reached 90 degrees on Monday and Tuesday and were expected to reach 90 again on Wednesday.

The Boston Public Health Commission is urging people to stay hydrated and to keep an eye out for neighbors that might be more vulnerable to the heat, such as the elderly and young children.

“Children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses and injuries, but everyone should remember to limit their activities during very hot weather, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol,” the city said in a statement. “When outdoors, limit strenuous activity, wear sunscreen and loose, light-colored clothing, and rest often in cool, shady areas. Additional measures to beat the heatinclude avoiding cooking, taking cool showers or baths, and staying in air conditioned areas whenever possible.”

The city’s pools will be opening starting June 29, and early all of the city’s 55 water sprays have already been turned on, the city said. You can see a full list of spray parks here.

“Summer is officially here, and it’s a great time to explore all of the wonderful activities Boston has to offer,” Mayor Menino said. “It’s a fun time to be out and about in the city, and we just want everyone to be safe while enjoying the warm weather.”
