Where Is the South End’s Closest Electric Car Charging Station?
Drivers who are considering a switch to electric vehicles or current vehicle owners looking for a place nearby to charge their rides have a couple of places to find their outlet. In the South End, the closest charging station is at Boston Medical Center garage, at 710 Albany St., according to crowd-sourced website carstations.com. Carstations allows users to upload new car charging locations to a Google map and (when applicable) provides details on the station. There are also more official sites providing electric car charging information. This week, NSTAR launched a new hotline and website to provide customers with information about electric vehicles, including local options for charging, payment options and details about electric vehicle technology, according to a statement released Wednesday. Launched in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, the new information center is a key part of a pilot program designed to help the state establish an electric vehicle infrastructure and continue efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to the NSTAR statement. “We’re excited about the launch of our new electric vehicle information center to offer customers expert service, information and guidance about electric vehicles and vehicle charging options,” said Penni Conner, senior vice president and chief customer officer at Northeast Utilities, NSTAR’s parent company. “NSTAR is providing a single point of contact for our customers and communities, making it easy for them to find the answers they need to make informed decisions about electric vehicles.” The NSTAR electric vehicle information hotline can be reached at 855-463-6438 and is staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, customers can find information 24/7 at the company’s new website, nstar.plugymride.org. The NSTAR hotline is the first of many to come, according to the statement. Northeast Utilities plans to set up similar information centers through its other companies in New England. South End’s Cathedral: A ‘Good Sign’ New Pope is from Latin America
After a short conclave, cardinals at the Vatican announced Wednesday that Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected the new pope and would call himself Pope Francis. Parishoners at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End said they were a little sad – but also happy – that Boston Cardinal SeanO’Malley wasn’t selected. “They always say anyone that has press before the conclave will go in and come out a cardinal – it’s always that quiet one, the one that isn’t on the radar,” said Bob Travers Jr., a pastoral associate at the cathedral. Travers said that the South End church where Cardinal O’Malley is in residency would have lost their Cardinal, and possibly their Father Kevin J. O’Leary, too, to Rome, so the announcement is bittersweet. “Now, we’ve still got them both,” he said. Pope Francis 76, is the 266th pontiff of the Catholic Church. He’s not only the first to be called Francis, he’s also the first pope from South America, the first Jesuit, and the first non-European pope in more than 1,000 years. Travers said he thinks it’s a good sign that someone from Latin America was chosen to lead the Catholic church. “The future of the church is in Latin America and Africa, and I think the Cardinals recognized that,” he said. More than 20 Boston businesses are being recognized as 2013 Pacesetters this spring for being among the 70 fastest growing private companies in Massachusetts—businesses that saw the most revenue growth over the past three years, with a revenue baseline of $ 1 million. Genuine’s executive creative director and co-founder Chris Pape, said he and CEO John Grayson founded the company seven years ago with a firm grasp on innovation through collaboration for the digital market. “I wanted to ceate an agency that produced impactful digital ideas and to do that, we needed to have all of the relevant digital thinkers in the room,” he said. “It’s paid off because the work we’ve produced has been really well received, gone viral or been hugely impactful, and it’s because we’re thinking in the digital space.” Pape also said he’s honored to be surrounded by his 90 or so employees that really care about the work they do. “They care so much about the results and what we do for clients, and their work is really different and stands out,” he said. Pape said the location of the office in the South End was not by chance—he considers the South End a great place to work because of its art, culture, restaurants and overall vibe. “We try to attract a creative but also techncially savvy person, and there’s so many people like that in this neighborhood and this city, the South End just makes sense to us.” he said. “The other cool part is there so many technologically focused companies, and we like to be surrounded by innovative people.” The 2013 Pacesetters will be recognized at an April 25 event in downtown Boston.
