Things to Know in the South End Today, Feb. 28: Grand Opening at K9strolls Shop and Play

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is a cloudy day with a chance of rain in the morning. Temperatures will hover around 47 degrees.  2. K9strolls Shop and Play Opening: Check out the new space for your four-legged companions at K9strolls Shop and Play (83 Pembroke St.) Daniel and Jim Avila-Batty, the owners, had run their business out of their South End home for several years, and recently opened up on Pembroke Street. Tonight they are holding a grand opening celebration from 6-8 p.m. See here for more information. 3. Live Music at Darryl’s: Elevation Theory, who got their start at Berklee College of Music, will be playing will tonight at 7 p.m. at Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen (604 Columbus Ave.) Their style is described as “definitive tones and sweet, pocketed grooves.” See here for more information.  4. For Middle Schoolers: An “Art Journaling for Fifth-graders and Up” workshop will be held today  at the South End branch library between 4 and 5 p.m. It’s free and materials will be provided. See here for more information.  5. Poetry Competition: Happening this weekend in the South End is the Boston edition of the statewide “Poetry Outloud” competition for teens. Poetry Out Loud (POL) is a national recitation competition that celebrates the power of the spoken word and a mastery of public speaking skills while cultivating self-confidence and an appreciation of students’ literary heritage as they take poetry from the page to the stage. You can catch the action at the Boston Center for The Arts 539 Tremont St. starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Things to Know in the South End Today, Feb. 27: Live Music at Darryl’s

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a pretty gross day. It will start out with rain and snow and turn into all rain after 8 a.m. High temperatures will be around 39 degrees.  2. Bass Guitarist at Darryl’s: Bass guitarist Chris Faison, of Soul Fuzion, will perform tonight at 7 p.m. at Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen (604 Columbus Ave.) Faison will be playing different blends of music ranging from Top 40 to Old School. Things to Know in the South End Today, Feb. 26: Community Meeting on Albany Street Project Tonight

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a partly sunny day with a high of 42 degrees.  2. Community Meeting on 275 Albany Street: If you’d like to have a say about the recently changed hotel-to-apartment-complex project designed for 275 Albany Street, stop by a South End community meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Project Place 1145 Washington St. The developer of the Albany Street site was first approved in 2010 to build two hotels and a parking lot at 275 Albany Street. That plan changed the first time in the summer of 2012 to become half hotel, half residential, and the developer is now seeking to change the project to two new residential buildings. See here for more information.  3. “Townie” Author at South End Library: Tonight, the South End Library and Friends of the South End Library will host acclaimed author, Andre Dubus III who will read from his compelling memoir, Townie. It describes his early life growing up amid violence and chaos on the poor side of  local towns –including Haverill –after his father, the eminent writer Andre Dubus, left the family and visited only on Sundays. The talk starts at 6:30 p.m. See here for more information.  4. Art at OWK: Starting tonight, United South End Artists, Inc. and OKW Fine Clothing & Gallery will present the 4th annual Small Works Show at OKW Fine Clothing & Gallery in the South End.The exhibit will feature original paintings, photography and sculpture produced by member artists of United South End Artists, Inc., and will run through April 4. Things to Know in the South End Today, Feb. 25: Foodie’s Expands to South Boston

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a partly sunny day with a high of 42 degrees.  2. Foodie’s Expansion: Foodie’s Market, which has served the South End community for 14 years from its location at 1421 Washington St., opened a $ 3 million new market at 240 West Broadway in South Boston. The owners were recipients of a $ 1.4 million small business loan made possible by federal stimulus funds.   3. Exhibition Extended: Adelson Gallery (520 Harrison Ave.) has extended the stay of its Winfred Rembert exhibition, Caint to Caint. The title of the show is based on Winfred Rembert’s painting, “Caint to Caint (Can’t see when you go to work, can’t see when you get back),” referring to working in the cotton fields before sunrise until after sunset during his days in Cuthbert, Georgia in the 1950s and 60s. Rembert himself will be at the gallery on Friday, March 1st from 6-8 p.m. See here for more information.  4. Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk: Registration is open for the 25th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, set for Sunday, Sept. 8. The one-day fundraising event to fight all cancers offers four routes: the 26.2-mile route starting from Hopkinton; the 13.1-mile route from Babson College in Wellesley; the 5-mile route from Boston College; and the 3-mile route from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. All routes end at the Copley Square finish line in Boston. See here for more information.  5. Pet Store Moves: South End pet store K9strolls is now open in its new location on Pembroke Street. Learn to Tango: Step into the new MOVIMIENTO (450 Harrison Ave.) for a crash course on authentic Argentine Tango tonight at either 6:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. No dance experience is required. You’ll learn the basic elements, practice drills, and work on movement quality as well as partner connection. The musical structures of Argentine Tango will be introduced.
