Twice Monthly I-93 Overnight Closures to Begin Tuesday

Maintenance on Interstate 93 will require transportation officials to close the expressway through Boston two times per month beginning Tuesday on the northbound side. Traffic on I-93 northbound will be detoured off the expressway at exit 16, Southampton Street, and directed along surface streets beginning Tuesday, June 18 at 11 p.m. and ending Wednesday, June 19 at 5 a.m., according to a state Department of Transportation press statement. Traffic may re-enter I-93 northbound at the Haymarket on-ramp. Traffic headed toward Route 1 northbound (Tobin Bridge) should stay on surface roads and access the Route 1 northbound on-ramp at City Square, according to the statement. Work will include tunnel wall and sign washing, drain clearing and maintenance, as well as maintenance of electrical and communications systems. The next closure will be on the southbound side of I-93 the night of July 2 into July 3. Following that will be another closure on the northbound side the night of July 16 into July 17. Section of Mass Pike to Close Overnight

A section of the Mass Pike will be closed overnight as crews continue to fix a lighting and ventilation issue caused by a Sunday power outage. The Prudential Tunnel will be closed to vehicular traffic between 1 and 5 a.m. at the latest Monday, according to a Massachusetts State Police alert Sunday evening. The alert continues: MassDOT urges motorists to allow extra time to reach their destination during this time frame. The closure is being implemented as a public safety precaution. NStar will be performing electrical work that may impact the tunnel’s lighting and ventilation systems. Motorists traveling East on the Pike will be detoured to Storrow Drive East via Exit 18/Allston-Brighton. Truckers must find an alternate route. Pike West travelers will follow I-93 Southbound to Mass Ave. I-93 Northbound and Southbound travelers destined for the Pike West will be detoured to Mass Ave.   For transportation news and updates visit MassDOT at our website:www.mass.gov/massdot, blog: www.mass.gov/blog/transportation, or follow MassDOT on twitter atwww.twitter.com/massdot and Facebookatwww.facebook.com/massdotinfo. Storrow East Down to One Lane Overnight

Drivers on Storrow Drive heading east at night may want to think about an alternate route during the spring months. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation will be bring the eastbound side of Storrow Drive down to one lane at the drive’s tunnel between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for the next six to eight weeks, according to Jack Murray, deputy commissioner of DCR. Crews will be cleaning and painting the steel elements inside the Storrow Drive tunnel on the eastbound side, which begins at the Clarendon Street exit and ends at Charles Circle. The tunnel was painted in 2010, but the product did not hold up as well as DCR officials would have liked, Murray said. A new protectant will be used, and the work will likely continue through early May. “Our plan is to gauge the progress and determine how long the job will take,” Murray said. There will not be a detour during the work. SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch
