SoWa Food Truck Runs Kickstarter Campaign to Open Restaurant
One of Boston’s most popular food trucks, Mei Mei’s Street Kitchen, is opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Audubon Circle this summer. But the owners of this already non-traditional business have sourced funding for their new expansion in yet another non-traditional way: By launching a Kickstarter campaign. Owners and siblings Andy, Margaret (Mei) & Irene Li opened their American-Chinese cuisine food truck in 2012, combining Andy’s dining management experience with Mei’s business acumen and Irene’s farming and cooking skills. Their Kickstarter campaign set a goal of $ 28,000 on June 1st to help turn their brick-and-mortar restaurance space into a certified sustainable business by the Sustainable Business Network. The trio said funds raised will go to environmentally-friendly improvements such as energy-efficient lighting, infrastructure & kitchen equipment, low-flow plumbing, compost and recycling programs, reclaimed materials for our floors, walls and counters and other green intiatives. And by Monday, June 24, one day before the last day of the campaign, they had raised $ 32,000 through more than 300 backers to accomplishing their goal. “We’re so grateful for all your support, and we’re so excited to feed you in the restaurant and hook you up with your rewards!” they wrote in an update on their Kickstarter page. Filling up three separate lots in the South End, the SoWa Open Market packed the south part of the neighorhood this past Father’s Day, Sun. June 16. Complete with a farmers’ market, artisans market and food trucks, the SoWa Open Market is celebrating 10 years this season. Things to Know in the South End, June 7: SoWa First Fridays
1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a rainy day, with a high near 61 degrees. Chance of rain is 80 percent. 2. First Fridays: Several art galleries in the SoWa area are holding exhibition opening celebrations tonight from 6-8 p.m. At Gallery 601, they’ll be showing Work of CFA artists. Knife Sharpening: Today at 4 p.m., Patti from On the Edge Knife Sharpening will be at Formaggio Kitchen South End (268 Shawmut Ave.) to help you with sharpening your knives. The price for knife sharpening is $ 5 for knives with blades under 6″ and $ 10 for knives with blades over 6″. See here for more information. 3. Breathing Deep: Tonight at 7 p.m., South End Yoga, (111 W Concord St.) will feature special guest Lama Gursam, who will teach yogic breathing and meditation. Markey in Chinatown: OK, it’s not the South End, but it’s close. Congressman Edward Markey, and candidate for U.S. Senate, will be at the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (38 Ash St.) today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. as part of a ‘Community Conversations’ Speaker Series. Food Truck Lineup at SoWa for 2013 Season
The 2013 SoWa Open Market will feature its usual open market, vintage market and farmer’s market, and this year, will include an expanded lineup of food trucks, featuring more than 35 different food vendors and restaurants on wheels. The market opens for the 2013 season on Sunday, May 5th. The open market, which will be celebrating its ten year annivesary this year, is open every Sunday from May through October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with several different locations up and down Harrison Avenue in the South End’s SoWa district. The food trucks will be parked at the Trolly Building at 540 Harrison Ave. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. SoWa Market, Art Walk Kick off on Sunday
The birds are chirping, the sun is out, and if that weren’t enough, the spring is about to get that much sweeter in the South End with the opening weekend of the SoWa open market and the annual SoWa Art Walk kicking off this Sunday. The SoWa Open Market is promising to be even bigger and better this year, in its several venues: the open air market with a farmers’ market, a vintage market and its food trucks. Organizers say there will be more than 100 vendors at the crafts market, 70 vendors at the farmers market and 40 food trucks this year. You can see a list of all the food trucks here. The farmer’s market is located at 500 Harrison Avenue and features produce from local farmers and specialty food vendors. The open market, at 460 Harrison Ave. features work by local artists and crafters who sell unique gift items like jewelry, clothing, toys, pottery and more. The third part of the market is a large, year-round vintage market that features furniture and clothing. The vintage market is open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., not just during the summer. And for those with a hankering for a freshly cooked meal, there’s the food truck area in the Trolly Building at 540 Harrison Ave. Special to this weekend’s SoWa festivities is the annual SoWa Art Walk. And for those with a hankering for a freshly cooked meal, there’s the food truck area in the Trolly Building at 540 Harrison Ave. Vendor Scholarships OfferedNew this year to the market is a scholarship program for new and up-and-coming Open Market vendors. “Many of you started out at SoWa and had wonderful, sharing neighbors that not only gave you helpful feedback, but also become good friends,” the market announced on Facebook. “We’d like to give that same opportunity to up-and-coming makers in the form of a SoWa Open Market scholarship.” The idea is to give those who have been in business for three years or less, and who never had the opportunity to have a booth at SoWa a chance. The scholarship consists of one free booth per month at the SoWa Open Market for a total of 6 markets (a $ 600 value). The recipient will also get advice from market mentors.
