Things to Know in the South End Today, March 19: Bookbinding at Olives & Grace

1. Weather: Get ready for a messy morning commute. The National Weather Service is predicting snow before 10 a.m., then snow and sleet between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., then rain and snow after 11 a.m. with a high near 36 degrees. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible. 2. Bookbinding Workshop: Head to artisan gift shop Olives & Grace tonight for a mini-bookbinding workshop taught by local letterpress artist, Bessie of B.Impressed in Jamaica Plain. Each month Bessie teaches leads a Makers Workshop, where she shares her letterpress and design skills. Yoga for Babies: A new 10-week session of Yogastarz starts today at Coco Baby, for children ages 2.5 to 5 years old. Through basic yoga techniques, movement, music, and stories, children will awaken their appreciation of their whole being. Things to Know in the South End Today, March 18: Benefit Dinner for Joslin Diabetes

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a partly cloudy day with a high of 36 degrees.  2. Chefs Benefit Dinner: Join South End chefs Joanne Chang, Andy Husbands and other top Boston chefs for a food tasting to benefit the Joslin Diabetes Center tonight at the Americas Wing at the Museum of Fine Arts. Guests will enjoy an evening of gourmet dishes prepared by some of Boston’s most renowned chefs, and proceeds benefit Joslin Diabetes Center’s Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI), which strives to enhance the quality of life and health outcomes for the rising number of Asian Americans living with diabetes, as well as working with Joslin in their commitment to finding a cure. Decoupage Workshop: If you’re interested in learning about the art of decoupage, South End artist Jennifer Sherr is hosting a 4-week decoupage workshop that starts today. Evacuation Day: In observation of Evacuation Day, Boston Public Schools will be closed today. What’s this holiday all about It’s the day commemorating the British’s retreat from the city during the Revolutionary War. It also means free parking at meters across the city (2-hour limit still applies). City Hall, community centers and libraries will be open regular hours. Things to Know in the South End Today, March 15: Meet the ‘Rock Lobster’

Meet the Rock Lobster: Aaron Fricke, author of the acclaimed autobiography, Reflections of a Rock Lobster, will discuss his inspirational journey from bullied high school student to acclaimed author and activist at a post-show reception on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 10:30 pm at the Boston Center for the Arts’ Calderwood Pavilion. See here for more information.  3. Garden Plots Available: Community garden plots are available in Titus Sparrow Park, located between Columbus Ave. and the Southwest Corridor Park along West Newton Street and West Rutland Square. The class is designed for people who have already taken the beginner’s class offered on week nights. This series will transition your knowledge of the structures and temperment of Argentine Tango to Close Embrace. Close Embrace is the true social dance of the Argentine Tango. Things to Know in the South End Today, March 14: Irish Harp Orchestra Performance

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a partly sunny day with a high of 41 degrees.  2. Irish Harp Orchestra: Kick off your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with toe-tapping Irish tunes from the New England Irish Harp Orchestra. Comprised of 17 harpists, the group will perform sing-a-long songs and Irish dance tunes that will give the audience a “taste of Ireland.” Happening tonight at 7 p.m. at the Community Music Center of Boston (34 Warren Ave.). See here for more information.  3. Cardinal O’Malley Back to South End: The new leader of the Catholic church was selected yesterday, and it wasn’t the South End’s Cardinal Sean O’Malley. The new pope is Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, who will go by Pope Francis. Read more on the local reaction here.  4. Street Sweeping Postponed:  Remember, street sweeping in the South End for this week has been postponed due to weather conditons, so you will not have to move your cars this week.  5. Voter registration:  The last day to register to vote or change one’s voting address or party affiliation for the April 30 primary is April 10. The Election Department is located in Room 241 of Boston City Hall and will be open until 8 p.m. that evening to accommodate prospective registrants and those wishing to make changes. Voters who have used absentee ballots in the past are reminded that a new application must be filled out each calendar year. Applications can be downloaded from the Election Department’s website, www.cityofboston.gov/elections. Opening at BCA:  Starting tonight at the Boston Center for The Arts (539 Tremont St.), Wellesley High Theatre Company presents a self-scripted drama Passenger, a show about one teen’s journey that moves between reality and abstraction as she faces cancer. All proceeds from Boston shows will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation. Street Sweeping Pushed Back: Even though the South End is part of an extended street sweeping program, which includes the month of March, the program has been pushed back again from its March 1st start date to March 18th. We’ll keep you posted on this week-by-week, as it’s weather dependent.  3. Hollywood Stops By: If you see some movie trucks in the neighborhood this week, it’s because ABC is going to be filming inside a Waltham street home for a new TV series. Setup will take place this week and actual filming is happening on March 18th.  4. Celebrity Bartender at Darryl’s: Stop by Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen (604 Columbus Ave) tonight from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to meet Dr. Tiffany Cooper Gueye for charitable cocktails to benefit Bell: Building Educated Leaders for Life.Each month, a different local celebrity will act as bartender for the evening and serve up his or her favorite cocktail with all of the proceeds going toward the charity of choice. Things to Know in the South End Today, March 8: ‘Reflections of a Rock Lobster’ Opens

1. Play Opens: The highly acclaimed “Reflections of a Rock Lobster” opens this weekend at the Boston Center for the Arts. The play is based on a true story of a 17 year-old gay student from Cumberland, Rhode Island who sued his high school in 1980 for the right to escort his boyfriend to his high school prom. See here for more information.  2. Weather: Light snow continued through most of yesterday, and when the last of the precipitation clears, we have what looks likeclear skies for the weekend. 3. Revolutionary Women: Stop by Harriet Tubman Park this Sunday at 10 a.m. for a Revolutionary Women & Reggae Festival event: A candle lighting to celebrate Harriet Tubman.
