Downtown Waterfront Planning Begins March 13

The city will kick off its latest round of waterfront development planning with a series of public meetings and tours in mid-March. This newest planning process, which is expected to last 18 months to two years, involves the redevelopment of the Downtown Waterfront area, from Long Wharf down to the Evelyn Moakley Bridge (Seaport Boulevard) and the James Hook & Co. lobster business, said Chris Busch, waterfront planner for the Boston Redevelopment Authority. “The events in March are sort of a kick-off, an introduction and orientation,” Busch said. “Then we’ll get into monthly meetings to develop the municipal harbor plan specific to the downtown waterfront area between Long Wharf and Hook Lobsters.” Over the past 20 years, the city has developed a number of municipal harbor plans for areas including East Boston, Charlestown, South Boston and Fort Point, Busch said. The most recent plan was done in 2009 for about 100 acres on the South Boston side of the Fort Point Channel. This latest planning effort will build upon the BRA’s 2010 Greenway District planning study and will result in a new municipal harbor plan for the Downtown Waterfront and zoning recommendations for the Greenway District, according to an event flier posted on the BRA website. The first event in the Downtown Waterfront project will be a project overview meeting, scheduled Wednesday, March 13 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the New England Aquarium IMAX Theater, 1 Central Wharf. At that meeting—which is open to the public along with the other two events—the BRA will introduce consultants from Utile Inc. and discuss the scope, process and timeline of the planning project. Planners will be looking at a range of features along the waterfront, including the Harbor Walk, streetscapes, plazas, areas extending into the water such as docks, water transportation offerings and programming opportunities, Busch said. Zoning issues for the area will also be addressed. Through the planning process, the city hopes to “enhance and build on what’s already out there and what’s been successful,” Busch said, as well as find ways to better connect the waterfront area with the Greenway and surrounding neighborhoods. The second event is a series of three walking tours of the Downtown Waterfront area that will be addressed in the planning project. The tours are scheduled for Thursday, March 14 at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., starting at Christopher Columbus Park in the North End and extending down to the Hook & Co. site. The third event, the “Waterfront Activation and Public Realm Visioning Charrette,” will be held on Friday, March 15 from 8-11 a.m. at the Boston Harbor Hotel, 70 Rowes Wharf, in the Atlantic Room. New Trash Pilot Program Starting March 1st

Due to efforts by neighborhood associations, the South End Public Works Forum and the city of Boston to improve cleanliness on South End streets, a new pilot program will begin this week to test one way to reduce unwanted trash.  Under the new program, residents who live in the area between Tremont Street, East/West Newton Street, Harrison Avenue and Massachusetts Avenue will have from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. to put their trash on the curb before morning pickup. The pilot program starts March 1st.  Currently, residents can put trash out at 5 p.m., but with trash sitting on the street for longer, there is more opportunity for scanvengers and litter, according to the city. Under the new pilot program there is a $ 25 file for being cited by the city’s Code Enforcement Police (CEP).  “We’ve had a long term involvement with a number of the South End neighborhood groups, and one of the major issues that has been frequently discussed is about street cleanliness,” said Matthew Mayrl, spokesperson for the Department of Public Works. “This was brought to us as a concept, but  we took some time to think it through and talk through how we might do it  to see if we can make a dent in street cleanliness through reduced place out times.” Mayrl said he recognizes it may not be feasible for everyone, but that’s the point of the pilot – to see if it will work. “Our goal here is to try to keep the streets as clean as possible, and this is something proposed to use by the neighborhood,” he said. “We know we like to see clearer streets in the South End, and we’re trying a bunch of different things and this is one of them.” Are you excited about this new effort to keep South End streets cleaner, or are you worried that eight hours isn’t enough time to get your trash on the curb before pickup? Tell us in the comments.  SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch

Attention Foodies: ‘Taste of the South End’ To Return in March

Preparations are already underway for one of the food-enthusiasts of the South End’s biggest events: Taste of the South End. The large-scale event is an annual fundraiser for the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. This year’s event, to be held on March 5, 2013, at the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts, will feature 43 different South End restuarants and includes food, wine, beer, cocktails, prizes and more.  Expect to see South End favorites like Myers & Chang, Hamersly’s Bistro, Tremont 647, Aquitaine, B&G Oysters and other neighborhood favorites preparing unlimited food and wine samples. For your ticket price of $ 100, you get unlimited food and wine from the restaurants, who all set up right there on scene.  Organizer Cathy Kujala said the event, which enters its 8th year in 2013, draws a crowd of about 700 people each year.  “We see a really strong showing of people who live right here in the South End, it’s a big neighborhood event,” she said. “We have really great support from the South End restaurants – some very strong restaurants participate each year.” The AIDS Action Committee is connected to the South End through their MALE Center (571 Columbus Ave.) a clinic for gay and bisexual men that provides rapid HIV testing and mental health services.  “We test over 1,000 men a year there for HIV,” said Kujala. “If they come in and they are positive we can guide them on the next steps, and if they are negative, we can guide them to stay negative,” she said.   Besides pulling the South End community together for a common cause, the event serves as a major fundraiser for the organization, which hopes to raise $ 120,000 through the 2013 event.  “Unfortunately, we quite often see decreases in federal funding to fight HIV and AIDS, and we need to fill that gap,” said Kujala, noting the drop in funding is even more sad because the efforts are working. “Over the last ten years in Masssachusetts, we’ve seen a 53 percent decrease in HIV, which translates to thousands of lives being saved and also about $ 2 billion saved in health care costs,’ she said. “So what we’re doing is working, and we need to keep doing it.”  Details:Day: March 5, 2013General Admission: 7:00 pm – 9:30 pmVIP Admission: 6:00 pmThe Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts539 Tremont Street, Boston SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch
