Residents Shocked, Scared and Obeying Shelter-in-Place Order

Shock, fear and an eerie sense of quiet has quickly taken over the Boston area while one of the largest manhunts in the history American history continues. “Shock. Utter shock,” wrote Erika Hunt on Jamaica Plain’s Facebook page. “Thankful for (Facebook) and the ability to keep in touch with everyone.” “Living in Boston right now is scary. I love Boston, but looking forward to moving down south in the fall,” wrote Mishelle Westling on West Roxbury Patch’s Facebook page. “Hope they get the kid and end this,” wrote Heidi Kreuter on West Roxbury Patch’s Facebook page. Concern for children, whether it be about the actual events, or being trapped inside, is a common thread. “Seems quiet outside,” said Liam Sulllivan on JP’s Patch’s Facebook page. “The kids are already getting cabin fever inside.” “I feel sad for our children. This is a scary world,” wrote Liz Ryan on West Roxbury Patch’s Facebook page. Others offered suggestions on how to deal with the stress once the “stay-in-shelter” is lifted. “Might be time to go to the garden and take a life break,” wrote John McLachlan on the South End Patch’s Facebook page. Some wondered when they could leave their homes for some of life’s necessities. “Where can I go to get more coffee. Need Coffee in Charlestown! #BostonStrong” one Charlestown resident wrote on Twitter. Less than 10 minutes later, she posted: “Excellent neighbors in Charlestown. One just knocked on my door and brought me coffee. #BostonStrong“ Others were trying to look at the silver lining, while issuing concern for others. “I am happy to pay my taxes,” wrote Alice Andrus on South End Patch’s Facebook page. “A bit anxious. Harvard is closed today — thinking about the essential staff who might be required to go to work. Worried about my foster daughter who is at UMass Dartmouth — the fugitive lived in the dorm next to hers and everyone is on lockdown,” wrote Randi Ellingboe on JP Patch’s Facebook page. “I am trusting in law enforcement officials. I am trying to feel calm while I am safe in my home and I am feeling glad that my 93-year-old father is safe in his rehab facility. Stay safe everyone,” wrote Rosanne Runfola on West Roxbury Patch’s Facebook page. “My husband was already at work by 7 a.m. this morning. First time ever, I told him to stay there,” wrote Ann Williams on JP Patch’s Facebook page.  “My partner and I are respecting the shelter-in-place order, neither of us has gone to work. I work for state gov’t (non-law enforcement), so I’ve been told to stay home. Haven’t checked […]

Governor, Mayor Extend ‘Shelter In Place’ Order Through Entire City

Governor Deval Patrick and Police Commissioner Ed David (Speaking for Mayor Tom Menino) have extended the “Shelter in Place” recommendation to all of Boston.  “We’re asking people to shelter in place. In other words, to stay indoors with their doors locked and not to open their door for anyone other than a properly identified law enforcement officer,” said Patrick in a press conference in Watertown this morning.  The order is an extension of the previous shelter recommendation, which included Watertown, Waltham, Newton, Belmont, Cambridge and Allston/Brighton. The new order means there are approximately 935,000 people are now locked in their homes. “Please understand we have an armed and dangerous person(s) still at large and police actively pursuing every lead in this active emergency event. Please be patient and use common sense until this person(s) are apprehended,” read a statement from the mayor’s office. South End Patch

Taylor Street ‘Stop Work’ Order Lifted, East Wall to Be Rebuilt

The construction at 8-10 Taylor Street will go on, decided the South End Landmarks Commission on Tuesday night. The wooden home is only one of two in the South End. It has faced controversy in the neighborhood since construction started several weeks ago, had its stop work order lifted after the commission’s review. The stop work order had been imposed due to the homeowner and contractor’s decision to take down an extra wall during the demolition process. That demolished east wall will be rebuilt based on preservation’s standards, the commission decided.  “The mistake was that you didn’t call when the wall had to come down,” said commission chair Christie Gamp. “I can’t believe knowing the contentiousness of this project and the neighbors that that didn’t happen… It’s unbelievable for the neighbors and all we’ve worked for and to feel like we’re blindsided,” said Christie Gamp.  Owner Ramy Rizkalla said his project had always intended to rebuild the home’s east wall. “The design wasn’t discussed very much because we were under the impression because it doesn’t give onto a public way, it’s not under the commission’s purview,” he said. “The rebuilding of that east wall was approved from a construction perspective… the wall was bowing, it was rotting, there was termite damage and it needed to be moved because of the fire code.” After some public testimony, the commission decided to lift the stop work order, pending a further review of plans to rebuild the home’s east wall up to the state’s preservation standards.  “I don’t think there’s any benefit to anyone to delay the project longer,” said commission member John Freeman. “We don’t have the purview to impose fines or a moratorium, although that can be done through the legal process. I want to see this project built because I’m embarrassed, quite frankly,” he said.  Neighbors in attendance agreed, noting that since the wall was already down, it was too late for a stop work order to hold any value.  “I’d much rather look at a home rather than a huge pile of rubble and a shoddily held up wall,” said Taylor Street resident Kate Alessi.  South End Historical Society Executive Director Hope Shannon noted at the meeting that she’s concerned that the front façade is also in danger of being demolished. “To ensure it lasts is extremely important,” she said.  Several neighbors and the Landmarks Commission also suggested to the owner to make amends in the neighborhood by adding improvements to the property’s nearby park.  For now, expect to see construction on the house resume in the next few days, and expect to see an update during the commission’s March […]
