What Do You Want in a Park? Boston Wants to Know

What makes a park great? Is it the amount of open space, the prevalence of natural features, shade trees, trails, benches, gardens or playgrounds? Is it a community garden, like Berkeley, or a nice space with benches, like Library Park?  The city of Boston has begun its effort to plan for the preservation of open space and the development of parks through 2021, and wants input from residents through a new online questionnaire.  The planning process will consider all of Boston’s public spaces including parks, playgrounds, squares, malls, community gardens, cemeteries, trails and harbor islands, and consider demographics and socio-economic trends and how they fit into park use, officials said.  Officials also plan to target natural areas for preseracation, such as rivers, harbors, wildlife and vegetation.  “Public participation is crucial to the success of the plan and the key ingredient to helping us make our parks and open spaces better,” the Parks Department said in a statement.  Residents can fill out the survey here. Copies of the questionnaire are also available at the Boston Public Library branches and the Boston Centers for Youth and Families community centers through May 24, by emailing openspaceplan2015@cityofboston.gov or by writing to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.  SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch

‘Boston Bites Back,’ Fundraiser for One Fund at Fenway Park

The Fenway neighborhood will play host to a large-scale fundraising event for the One Fund next week, known as Boston Bites Back. Nearly 100 of Boston’s top chefs will be coming together to present a special culinary tasting event at Fenway Park on May 15 in order to raise $ 1 million for The One Fund.  The event is spearheaded by celeb chefs Ken Oringer and Ming Tsai, the Boston Red Sox, Governor Patrick, Mayor Menino, and ARAMARK. The idea is to bring Bostonians together to eat, drink and demonstrate Boston’s unrelenting spirit, while raising money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, according to organizers. “BBB is an opportunity for the city to join as one and acknowledge our strength as a community,” said Ken Oringer, owner of Clio, Toro, Copa & Uni. “Nothing speaks more to our collective resolve than an evening of hospitality, unity and hometown pride in one of the most iconic venues in Boston – Fenway Park.” “Food is our common ground, a universal experience,” said Ming Tsai, owner of Blue Ginger & Blue Dragon. “This event is an occasion for Bostonians to reconnect over food, mingle with chefs and honor our city’s inspiring resilience. It’s an opportunity for Bostonians to literally ‘bite’ back.” The event also features an online auction with Boston-centric prizes like throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park, meeting Bill Belichcik, and a special celebrity cookoff right in your own home.  The event will be held from 6-10 p.m. at Fenway on Wednesday, May 15. General admission is $ 200, and VIP admission is $ 1,000 per ticket.  SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch

PHOTOS: Neighborhood Cleanup Day at Harriet Tubman Park

Last weekend, several South End residents got together to spruce up Harriet Tubman Park, an annual cleanup that takes on special significance this year. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s death, a fact not lost on the volunteers who came out to spruce up the park.  “There is special significance to cleaning up the park named after her, which also features the first statue honoring a woman on Boston-owned property,” said Scott Mabel of the Pilot Block Neighborhood Association. While several neighbors raked, swept, and weeded the park, others cleaned up the sidewalks and alley entrance areas, he said. About 15 people volunteered in all to clean up the park and some of the nearby alley areas. The park also features an interesting geo-cache, where more than 80 people have already logged their visits to the park.  Mabel said he frequently sees visitors to the park posing with the statue and taking a second to reflect on Tubman’s historical significance.  “I recently spoke to two construction workers who had finished their day early. They were posing in front of her statue on their way to visit the Marathon Memorial in Copley Sq.,” he said. “Then last night, I over-heard a woman telling a young child, ‘she worked on the underground railroad to help free the slaves’ as they walked past the park.” Do you frequent the park? Have you found the geocache? Are you glad to see volunteers helping to keep it nice? Tell us in the comments.  SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates South End Patch

Runners Bags Available at Park Plaza Castle Today

The Boston Athletic Association said runners may pick up their bags between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday at 130 Columbus Ave. Some runners have reported that they are also handing out medals, but the BAA could not confirm this. Just before noon, the Boston Athletic Association posted the following on its Facebook page:  First, we again want to express our sympathy to all of the victims and our gratitude to the first responders of yesterday’s explosions.  We’re working with the City of Boston to re-open streets that have been cleared from the investigation as quickly as possible. As such, the runners’ bags that were being picked up on Berkeley Street are now being moved to “The Castle” at 101 Arlington Street (at Stuart St.) and will be available until 7:00 p.m. tonight.  Later today, we’ll have updates on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday pick-up.  The finish line remains an active crime scene. We ask that our runners and the public please cooperate with the law enforcement agencies in the area for as long as our collective cooperation is requested.  We again extend a heartfelt thank you from us at the Boston Athletic Association for the condolences that have come in from around the world.
