Performances Announced for Boston Pops July 4 Concert
This year, the Boston Pops will feature all New England performers for their 40th Fourth of July celebration at the Hatch Shell. The two day concert on July 3 and 4 will feature Grammy-winner Susan Tedeschi, Howie Day, Ayla Brown, and Ellis Hall as well as the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra led by Maestro Keith Lockhart. While the celebration will keep traditions such as the real cannons and a ceremonial flag drop with confetti shot, for the first time in over 20 years, the celebration will not be televised nationally. A local broadcast will still be available through WBZ NewsRadio 1030 starting at 6 p.m., the CBS-affiliate WBZ-TV at 7 p.m. and at www.cbsboston.com. The event’s first official app has also been been released for download at the Apple Store and on Google Play under “Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.” The app includes an event schedule, vendor information and photo sharing capabilities with other app users. Things to Know in the South End, June 5: Garden Tour Announced
1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny day, with a high near 75 degrees. 2. South End Garden Tour: The South End Garden Society has announced it will host its annual South End Garden Tour on Saturday, June 15, 2013. This year’s rain-or-shine, self-guided tour will kick off at the South End Branch of the Boston Public Library at 685 Tremont Street from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. See here for more information. 3. Pride Singles Auction: Coming up on Thursday night at Club Cafe, (209 Columbus Ave.) Boston’s MaverickMen, Cole & Hunter are emceeing a special Pride bachelor & bachelorette auction presented by the Theatre Offensive. Bid to win a wonderful date with one (or two) sexy singles. All winners will receive a gift certificate. Tickets are $ 5 in advance, and $ 10 at the door. See here for more information. 4. Markey in Chinatown: OK, it’s not the South End, but it’s close. Congressman Edward Markey, and candidate for U.S. Senate, will be at the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (38 Ash St.) on Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. as part of a ‘Community Conversations’ Speaker Series. The idea is to offer the community a chance to have conversations with some of the most prominent decision-makers in the state. See here for more information. 5. Cool thing of the week: We’re unveiling a new feature this week that’ll make both sellers and shoppers happy – yard sale listings! All you do is input where in the South End you’ll be holding your yard sale using this handy form, and on Thursday we’ll post a map with all the details. Things to Know in the South End Today, March 21: Titus Sparrow Park Easter Egg Hunt Announced
1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a mostly cloudy day with a high near 37 degrees. There’s a 30 percent chance of snow showers, mainly after 11 a.m. but little or no snow accumulation is expected. 2. Titus Sparrow Park Easter Egg Hunt is On: This year’s Easter Egg Hunt in Titus Sparrow Park is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. In addition to the hunt for candy- and toy-filled eggs, the celebration will also feature a visit from the Easter Bunny, a craft table, coffee and hot chocolate from Starbucks, and more. Special this year to the hunt are 100% biodegradable easter eggs! The event is free and open to all ages. See here for more information. 3. Ringgold Easter Egg Hunt is Off: The Ringgold Spring Egg Hunt is cancelled this year! The long-awaited renovation of the two playground areas is taking place this spring and since they cannot guarantee that it will be open, they are are unable to plan the annual spring egg hunt. The good news is, they plan to be back next year and better than ever with fall and spring children’s events – if you’d like to be involved in the planning, contact ringgoldpark@verizon.net! 4. Educator award: The nominations for the annual Boston Educators of the Year awards are now open and will be accepted until April 11. The awards recognize outstanding teachers, paraprofessionals, guidance counselors, school nurses and other educators who have made a unique contribution to their students, their classrooms, and their schools. For Green Leaders: Greenovate deadline extended: Mayor Menino today has extended the deadline for nominations for the 2013 Mayor’s Greenovate Boston Awards and Bike Friendly Business Awards to midnight, March 29. These awards recognize local sustainability and environmental awareness leaders in four different categories – Green Business, Green Residential, Sustainable Food Leadership and Bike Friendly Businesses. Food Truck Lineup at SoWa Announced for Upcoming Season
The organizers behind the SoWa market have been busy this winter. The 2013 SoWa Open Market will feature its usual open market, vintage market and farmer’s market, and this year, will include an expanded lineup of food trucks, featuring more than 35 different food vendors and restaurants on wheels. The open market, which will be celebrating its ten year annivesary this year, is open every Sunday from May through October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with several different locations up and down Harrison Avenue in the South End’s SoWa district. The 2013 season will begin on May 5th. The farmer’s market is located at 500 Harrison Avenue and features produce from local farmers and specialty food vendors. The open market, at 460 Harrison Ave. features work by local artists and crafters who sell unique gift items like jewelry, clothing, toys, pottery and more. The third part of the market is a large, year-round vintage market that features furniture and clothing. And for those with a hankering for a freshly cooked meal, there’s the food truck area in the Trolly Building at 540 Harrison Ave. Vendor Scholarships OfferedNew this year to the market is a scholarship program for new and up-and-coming Open Market vendors. “Many of you started out at SoWa and had wonderful, sharing neighbors that not only gave you helpful feedback, but also become good friends,” the market announced on Facebook. “We’d like to give that same opportunity to up-and-coming makers in the form of a SoWa Open Market scholarship.” The idea is to give those who have been in business for three years or less, and who never had the opportunity to have a booth at SoWa a chance. The scholarship consists of one free booth per month at the SoWa Open Market for a total of 6 markets (a $ 600 value). The recipient will also get advice from market mentors.
