Take Better Photos: The South End’s Coco Baby hosts a special photography class for parents tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. Local photographer Susannah Bothe will discuss natural light techniques and suggest camera settings that will help everyone to get better pictures just in time for summer. 1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny day, with a high near 90 degrees. There’s a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. 2. Quebec National Day at Beehive: To celebrate “La Fête nationale du Québec” or “Quebec National Day” Beehive Restaurant will be featuring an evening of inspired food and live performance from award-winning singer-songwriters Isabelle Cyr and Yves Marchand. Dinner starts at 5 p.m., and music starts at 8 p.m. The evening’s food will feature traditional Quebec fare and cocktails. See here for more information. 3. For the Kids: Urbanity Dance, (280 Shawmut Ave) is hosting a variety of summer kids dance classes, with everything from hip hop to a summer intensive program for kids 16 and older. Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day in Boston: June 22
This Saturday, June 22, is one of two days this summer in which Boston residents can drop off household hazardous waste to be disposed of for free. Residents may bring up to 50 pounds of products labeled toxic, flammable, reactive, corrosive, or poisonous, such as: oil-based paint, motor oil, pesticides, solvents, glues, bleach or ammonia-based cleaners, weed killers, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, car batteries, and used motor oil. Click for a full list of what you can and can’t bring. Note: Latex or acrylic (water-based) paints are no longer accepted at hazardous waste days. They are not hazardous and can be safely disposed at home. Residents must be prepared to show proof of residency in order to be able to drop anything off. Things to Know in the South End, June 21: Summer Solstice in Blackstone Square
1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny day, with a high near 85 degrees. There’s a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. 2. Blackstone Square Summer Solstice: Tonight is the South End Summer Solstice, brought to you by Washington Gateway Main Street in Blackstone Square (1525 Washington St.) Come hear free live music and enjoy offerings from six of your favorite food trucks on W. Brookline Street! See here for more information. 3. More Solstice Music on Friday: Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB) will be performing an hour of live music from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. outside Hamersley’s Bistro and the Beehive, South End Buttery, and Cinquecento tonight. These performances, free to the public, is part of the La Nuit de la Musique solstice celebration. Afterwards, CMCB’s orchestra and senior wind ensemble, along with special guests, will perform at the Benjamin Franklin Institute, followed by a private reception at 40 Berkley. Contributions to the concert and reception are $ 100 for supporters and $ 150 for special friends. All proceeds benefit the CMCB Scholarship Fund and can be made at www.cmcb.org. Tiki Party at Coda: Kick-off summer Caribbean-style at Coda Bar & Kitchen at their First Annual Coda Tiki Party at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22nd, with rum cocktails, island fare and laid back reggae jams! Popup at Farm & Fable: The South End’s newest business is hosting a pop-up store before the actual store is even built. Music in Worcester Square: The Worcester Square Area Neighborhood Association hosts its first installment of the Second Annual Summer Concert series in the Worcester Square Park tonight at 7 p.m. First Take will be the entertainment, playing classic jazz tunes as well as originals. For the Landlords: Since Boston passed an update to its rules regulating rentals, you as a landlord have a host of new responsibilities, including registration of private rental units and inspection of all non-exempt rental units every 5 years. The city is hosting a special session tonight at 6 p.m. to review the process, fees, dates and other important information for landlords to know. Donations Needed: Planet Self Storage, (33 Traveler St.) is seeking donations of used cell phones to be given for soldiers. Things To Know in the South End, June 12: Cell Phone Drive for Soldiers
1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a cloudy day, with a high near 71 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. 2. Donations Needed: Planet Self Storage, (33 Traveler St.) is seeking donations of used cell phones to be given for soldiers. Drop off your old cell phone at the front desk, and they will donate them for you. See here for more information. 3. Art Show: The South End Community Health Center, (1601 Washington St.) has announced it will host its first ever art show on Saturday, June 15, 2013. The organization will bring together a number of accomplish artists to help raise awarness about their mission and impact in the South End. Twenty percent of the sale proceeds made during the show will support the nonprofit. See here for more information. 4. South End Garden Tour: Don’t forget, this year’s South End Garden Tour will take place on June 15th, rain or shine. The 20th annual tour, “Artists in the Gardens” will feature artists from United South End Artists, Inc. at their easels creating en plein air paintings in selected gardens and other locations. Immediately after the tour, the paintings will be available for sale at a reception at City Year headquarters at 287 Columbus Avenue in the South End.
